the nation starts celebrating the 46th victory day on the early hour of friday across the country with elaborate programmes paying deep homage to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the country. people from the al walks of life in chittagong, barisal, sylhet, rajshahi, khulna district throng the local shaheed minar to pay rich tribute to the war heres. on this day in 1971, pakistani occupation forces surrendered after a nine-month war resulting in free, independent and sovereign bangladesh. the day is a public vacation . different political parties, socio-cultural organisations and educational institutions are set to hold various programmes to mark the victory day. the day wil be heralded with 31 gun salutes. meanwhile, president abdul hamid, prime minister sheikh hasina and bnp chairperson khaleda zia have issued separate messages on the occasion. in his message, the president said,” the government has set ‘vision 2021’ and ‘vision 2041’ for transforming bangladesh into a developed country. i’m hopeful that we would be able to materialize the 'vision' within the stipulated time by utilizing our huge human resources and information technology.” he hoped that the coordinated efforts of everybody wil turn bangladesh into a hunger- and poverty-free prosperous ‘sonar bangla’ (golden bangla) as dreamt by bangabandhu. in her message, prime minister sheikh hasina said, “let’s come and uphold the development and democratic spree being imbued with the spirit of the freedom struggle. let’s al engage ourselves in building a service-oriented, hunger- poverty-free and a happy prosperous 'golden bangladesh' as dreamt by the father of the nation.” as part of the day's programmes, a colourful parade wil be held at the national parade square at sher-e-bangla nagar at 10:30am. freedom fighters, members of the armed forces and law enforcement agencies wil take part in the parade. president abdul hamid wil take salute and inspect the parade as the chief guest. prime minister sheikh hasina wil also be present at the parade. president hamid and prime minister sheikh hasina wil place wreaths at the national mausoleum in savar in the morning to pay their tributes to the martyred freedom fighters. people from al walks of life wil also place wreaths at the national memorial. the national flag wil be hoisted atop al government and private buildings, while the government and semi-government buildings and other public places wil be illuminated and roads and islands wil be decorated with flags and festoons in al cities of the country on the occasion. national dailies wil bring out supplements, while state-owned and private televisions and radios wil broadcast special programmes highlighting the significance of the day. special prayers wil be offered in mosques, temples, churches, pagodas and other places of worship seeking divine blessings for the peace and progress of the country. the president wil accord a front desk to freedom fighters at bangabhaban in the afternoon. destitute children wil be allowed to visit the children park in the capital on the day free of cost. improved diets wil be served in jails, hospitals, orphanages and vagrant homes across the country. bangladesh missions abroad wil hoist the national flag and organize discussions, cultural functions and receptions. the ruling awami league has chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day. national and party flags wil be hoisted at the party's central office at bangabandhu avenue at dawn. awami league leaders and workers wil place wreaths at the national memorial at savar at the same time. the ruling party leaders wil also pay tributes to father of the nation bangabandhu sheikh mujibur rahman by placing wreaths at his portrait at bangabnadhu bhaban at dhanmondi in the city in the morning. besides, the party leaders and workers wil place wreaths at the graveyard of bangabandhu at tungipara in gopalganj district. awami league wil also bring out a victory rally from suhrawardy udyan at 3 pm. the ruling party wil hold a discussion at krishibid institution at 3pm on saturday while a cultural program at rabindra sarobar at dhanmondi at 6 pm on sunday.
