    victory day
    NBS | Friday, December 16th, 2016 | Published: 00:05 am

victory daydecember 16 is a red letter day in our national history as it in its deepest impulse is the successful culmination of the people’s long cherished dreams. on this day in 1971 bangladesh was liberated through the glorious victory in the liberation war against the pakistani occupation forces and emerged as an independent and sovereign state. the nation celebrates the 46th victory day today with a renewed pledge to uphold the spirit of the liberation war, defend the independense and safeguard the national sovereignty, strengthen democracy and achieve economic emancipation. the historic victory day is being celebrated this grade in a separate perspective and a different ambiense with extra jubilation as six war criminals have so far been executed and a number of others have been sentenced to death or imprisonment for their crimes against humanity committed during the war of liberation in 1971. today the grateful nation pays homage to those brave sons of the soil who laid down their lives for achieving this great victory. the victory in the liberation war and the independense of the country resulted from the life and death struggle of the whole nation under the leadership of the father of the nation bangabandhu sheikh mujibur rahman, gallant fight of the great sons of the soil and supreme sacrifice of three million people as wel as extreme humiliation of two lakh women of the country. the dreams that inspired the people to fight for liberation have not yet been implemented fully. although we have achieved political freedom, our economic emancipation is stil a distant goal, democracy is fragile and a society free from communalism is stil a long way off. despite a lot of changes in different fields, poverty and social discrimination are yet to end. thus the main objectives of the independense earned through the great victory in the liberation war remain to be accomplished fully. against this backdrop, the prime commitment of al on this victory day should be to uphold the spirit of the liberation war, translate the dreams of the martyrs to reality and contain communalism, terrorism and militancy. on this great occasion, we pay our profound tributes to bangabandhu and the martyrs and salute the war heres for liberating our homeland from pakistani occupation.
